Fugro is among the pioneers of satellite-based positioning systems and technology. In 1986, Fugro's US subsidiary, Fugro Chance, introduced the world's first precise satellite based positioning system, with a 24-hour/day operational capability. When the Global Positioning System subsequently became operationally available, Fugro applied its expertise in satellite and positioning technology to develop GPS augmentation systems capable of delivering sub-metre position accuracy, in real time, world-wide. These systems are known as Differential GPS. Later, the augmentation service also included the Russian GLONASS System.
